Everest Region
The Everest region in the Khumbu Valley north east of Kathmandu is Nepal’s second most popular Himalayan trekking destination with Everest Base Camp (EBC, 5346m) on the Khumbu Glacier, its main goal.
We offer a choice of eight treks in this region. Two short treks explore the region’s culture and dramatic scenery – including Everest views, at altitudes below 4000m. Our longer, more demanding treks include EBC. The Gokyo – Cho La trek and the three passes Everest Transverse Trek explore a wider region with breathtaking scenery and multiple views of many of the highest peaks. We also offer three strenuous peak-climbing expeditions that are suitable for fit and adventurous trekkers. The peaks are Mera Peak, Island Peak and Lobuche Peak – the latter requiring some technical experience.
Sharing in the life and culture of the friendly Sherpa people of this region is an integral part of trekking. Trails lead from village to village initially through forest and farmland to higher regions of alpine scrub, rock and ice. This region, more than most, has adapted to the tastes and requirements of “the foreign palate” and the tea houses offer a variety of dishes in addition to the tasty local fare.
Access is either by a long trek from the lowlands (followed by the early explorers – our Jiri to Base Camp Trek or a quick 35 minute flight from Kathmandu to the airport at Lukla (2642m). The paths are good and climb to the numerous ridge top villages from steel suspension bridges over incised glacial rivers.
Despite variations in altitude, trekkers need to be aware of the dangers of altitude sickness (AMS) if they ascend too quickly. Our treks are designed to minimise these risks with walks of 4-6 hours, a lengthy break for lunch and overnight stops that, where possible, do not gain more than 500m a day. A rest day is obligatory after 3000m is reached and above this if a rise of much over 500m is necessary – until you are well acclimatised.
Local porters will carry your luggage: you only need to carry a light day pack with warm/waterproof clothing, water, camera, sunscreen and hat. Our trek packages are inclusive of meals, accommodation, drinking water and showers. Additional beverages and snacks will be for your account.
The busiest trekking seasons are spring (March , May) and autumn (September, November) but we offer treks in all four seasons.
