Introduction

The Gokyo Lake - Cho La - EBC trek is this region’s ‘high altitude trek.’ After a scenic trans-Himalayan flight to Lukla, follow the Everest trail to Namche Bazaar and an acclimatization day.

Then branch North West to ascend the serene Dudh Koshi Valley to the lake village of Gokyo on the Ngozumpa glacial moraine. Use a rest day to explore the valley. A stiff climb up Gokyo Ri for sunrise offers soaring views over the glacier that include Cho Oyo, Ghyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. Then walk down the valley for an hour and cross the 1km glacier to Tagnag.

Start before sunrise for the tough Cho La ascent and long descent to Lobuche. This can be a difficult, cold but very beautiful trek.

The trail then rises, for two easier days, to Gorak Shep. After lunch, walk to view the ring of peaks surrounding Everest Base Camp, on the Khumbu Glacier – and the ice fall towards the summit.

From Gorak Shep, a sunrise hike up Kala Patthar offers superb views of Everest, the South Col, Nuptse and the glacier below. After breakfast, begin the easier, warmer, four day downward trek to Lukla.

This is a scheduled acclimatization day on the trek. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and health experts recommend a stop for at least one extra night. Be active and roam rather than laze around: climb high and sleep low is the acclimatisation advice Namche Bazaar has ATMs, cyber cafés, delicious restaurant food and bakeries, plus a colourful market each Friday evening and Saturday morning. Visit the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park Visitor’s Centre on the hillock: with informative displays on Sherpa culture, local flora and fauna Take an entertaining side trip to the large traditional Sherpa village of Khumjung (3,780m/12,402ft): with fine views of Thamserku, Kangtega, Ama Dablam and Everest – in a sea of lesser peaks. Return to Namche Bazaar for the night An alternative five hour walk northwest of the town, to Thame (3,820m/12,533ft) below the impressive 6,187m/20,300ft Kongde Ri ridge, offers panoramic Himalayan views not seen on the EBC route.

Day 6 : Namche Bazaar(3,440m/11,285ft) – Dole (4,200m/13,778ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 12km, 6-7 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The trail climbs up from the town and then contours around the hillside, offering great views including Everest and Khumjung. It then ascends along the lower slopes of Khumbila, branching northwest of the Everest trail and continuing up the Dudh Koshi Valley. It climbs steeply to the tiny village of Mong La (built around an ancient chorten), then drops to Phortse Thenga before climbing through a pine and rhododendron forest and on up to Dole – from where there are marvellous views of snow capped peaks. Look out for spotted deer, Himalayan Tahrs and birds – including the colourful (male) Danphe pheasant (Nepal’s national bird).

Day 7 : Dole(4,200m/13,778ft) – Machhermo (4,470m/14,664ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 7km, 4-5 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today’s walk leads along high trail through thorny alpine scrub, to scenic ridges above the river. Breathtaking views of Cho-Oyo, Thamserku and Kangtega are countered by charming views into the valley below where we pass summer-grazing hamlets such as Luza that lead up to Machhermo. The Machhermo Khola flows through the village from Kyajo Ri and Pharilapche before draining into the Dudh Koshi. This is the last settlement before Gokyo and has a HRA aid post for victims of AMS.

Day 8 : Machhermo(4,470m/14,664ft) – Gokyo (4,800m/15,747ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 7km, 3-4 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The trail rises gently from the village to a ridge that offers the first views of the north face of Cho-Oyo (8210m/26 907ft) and more views of Kangtega and Thamserku. Ahead in the valley is the snout of the Ngozumpa Glacier: the trail drops back towards the river. A metal bridge crosses the edge of the frozen Longponga Tsho (4,690m/15,383ft): the first of the Dudh Koshi’s six sacred lakes. Before Taboche Tsho, a path leads up onto the glacier – and the Cho La. A strenuous half hour’s walk beyond the lake leads to the summer village of Gokyo set on the side of the moraine and overlooking the blue-green Dudh Pokhari which nestles in a semi circle of high peaks at the foot of Gokyo Ri. Cho-Oyo and the ice ridge to Ghyachung Kang, from which the Ngozumpa glacier flows, are clearly visible behind ridges.

Day 9 : Gokyo Acclimatisation and exploration of the Gokyo Valley (4,790m/15,715ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Another scheduled rest day is stipulated to guard against AMS. Gokyo offers two major viewpoints. The first explores the fourth to sixth lakes north of the village. These lakes, together with melt water from the glacier are the source of the Dudh Koshi that is followed from Lukla. A trail rises gently, for three kilometres, north of the village to Thonak Tsho (4,870m/15,980m), the Ngozumpa Tsho (4,980m/16,340ft) and Scoundrel’s viewpoint (5,000m/16,405ft). From here there are tremendous close-up views of Cho-Oyu, Ghyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu. Approximately two hours is needed for the 200m descent back to Gokyo. If there is time, continue north along the path to the Cho-Oyo Base Camp at the northern end of the sixth lake; the Gyazumba Tsho. There are several small peaks in this region that offer vantage points for the surrounding peaks and views of the Nagpa La, the old trade route into Tibet further west.

Day 10 : Gokyo(4,800m/15,747ft) – Gokyo Ri (5,360 m/17,584 ft) – Tagnag, (4700 m/15,500 ft)

The second major viewpoint in the Gokyo region, Gokyo Ri, begins on the northern side of the lake, opposite the village. Its panorama invites an early start and involves a two hour climb to its summit. It overlooks the broad, rubble-covered Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s longest, gouged out beneath a wall of towering peaks on its south-eastern flank. From the flag bedecked summit is the unforgettable vista of the Himalayan chain that includes Cho-Oyu and Ghyachung Kang, the north face of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cholatse, Taboche, Thamserku, Kangtega, Kusum Kangru (all over 6,300m/20,670ft) and many more, some unnamed. After breakfast at the hotel, take a leisurely stroll back down the trail to past the second lake, Taboche Tsho, and then climb up the moraine and cross the kilometre wide glacier to the tiny summer hamlet of Tagnag.

Day 11 : Tagnag(4,700m/15,500ft) - Cho-la Pass (5,420 m/17,780 ft) - Dzonglha (4830m/15,845ft)
Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 10km, 8-9 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today will be the toughest, but most rewarding day of the trek. It calls for a very early start – to beat likely cloud at the pass. The trail is steep from the hotel and climbs through grazing lands over a hill. It then drops into a minor valley before climbing steeply up a vast, loose scree slope on ill-defined paths that eventually lead to the flags that mark the narrow neck. Behind are views of the glacier, Pharilapche and Kyajo Ri. At your feet is the Cho La glacier and to the southeast views that include impressive Cholatse, Baruntse, Lobuche West and East and out to pyramidal Ama Dablam. The descent requires walking down the glacier followed by a boulder scramble to easier terrain below, then down to the summer grazing village of Dzonglha

Day 12 : Dzonglha(4,830m/15,845ft) - Lobuche (4910 m/16,108ft)

Accomodation: Rest and overnight in Lobuche at Lodge
Activity Duration: 6km, 4-5 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A short and gentle two hours of trekking takes you further down the valley and around the ridge below Awi Peak before heading northeast up a gradual slope to Lobuche.

Day 13 : Lobuche (4,910m/16,108ft)- Gorak Shep (5,160m/16,928ft) - Base Camp (5,364m/17,597ft) - Gorak Shep

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 14km, 8-9 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Another long but rewarding day. Follow the windblown and rocky path along the barren moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to the last village at Gorak Shep. After an early lunch, set out on the feint trail to the world’s highest Base Camp on the Khumbu Glacier: opposite the dreaded icefall – the most dangerous section of an Everest ascent. In April/May the trail is busy with porters carrying in supplies and the site is a riot of colourful tents perched on the dirty ice. For the rest of the year it is a bleak and lonely place set below the impressive ice walls (and avalanches) of the Mahalangur Himal along the Tibetan border. From west to east, the visible peaks are Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse and Nuptse. Everest and the Cwm are hidden behind buttresses. Trek back to Gorak Shep for the night at Lodge.

Day 14 : Gorak Shep(5,160m/16,928ft) – Kala Patthar (5,550m/18,207ft) – Pheriche (4,230m/13,877ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 15km, 7-8 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

very early morning climb of 2-3 hrs up Kala Patthar, behind the village, offers a sunrise awakening of the Himalayan chain. First Everest (8,848m/29,028ft), then its surrounding vassals: Pumori (7,145m/23,443ft), Lingtren (6 697/21 973ft), Khumbutse (6,623m/21,730ft), Changtse (7,550m/24,772ft), Lhotse (8,516m/27,941ft) and Nuptse (7,861m/25,792ft). Plus Cho Oyo (8,201m/26,907ft) in the west and Ama Dablam to the south: amidst countless other peaks that crowd the horizon in all directions. Drop back to Gorak Shep for breakfast and then retrace your steps down to Lobuche before continuing south on the Everest – Lukla trail. At the southern end of Khumbu’s glacial moraine is a group of stone-pile memorials to lost climbers and Sherpas. From here there are wonderful views of the Mahalangu Himal along the Tibetan border; including Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse and the Nuptse – Lhotse ridge: which hides Everest from view. Drop down the moraine and continue on to the village of Pheriche for a lower and warmer night.

Day 15 : Pheriche(4,230m/13,877ft) – Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,28ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 17km, 8-9 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today’s trail gradually descends to Deboche before a mild rise through rhododendron forest to the hilltop village of Tengboche which has an important monastery and great views in all directions. A long descent, leads to Phunki Thenga (3,250m/10,663ft) on the Imja Khola: the trek’s lowest point north of Lukla. The path then climbs to Sanasa (where the trail forked to Gokyo) beyond which it broadens for the pleasant contour walk back to Namche Bazaar.

Day 16 : Namche (3,440m/11,280ft) - Lukla (2,845m/9,333ft)

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 19km, 8-9 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

From Namche, the trail descends to more comfortable altitudes, passing through the friendly farming villages of Jorsale (where we exit the National Park), Monjo, Phakding, then crosses the suspension bridge at Thado Koshi before rising to Ghat and Cheplung. Round off the adventure with the final 700m, 35min ascent to Lukla: and say goodbye to your porters.

Day 17 : Lukla(2,845m/9,333ft) – Kathmandu (1,300m/4,265ft)

Accomodation: 3 star Hotel (Twin Room) with breakfast
Activity Duration: 35 min flight
Meals: Breakfast,

After an early breakfast, take the return flight to Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel. Rest of day free. Overnight in Kathmandu at 3 star Hotel

Day 18 : Final departure

Meals: Breakfast,

This day is marked as departure day. After breakfast, check out your room at 12pm and transfer to Tribhuvan International airport for departure flight. Final word: We have prepared the packages as advised by Mr. knows all (our experts); however, the time duration from one route to another route is generalized and may vary from trekker to trekker. Gokyo-Chola pass-Everest Base Camp is one of the most difficult treks in Everest region. The trail is full of boulders, ice crevasse and slippery therefore be careful throughout the journey. The climate is also bizarre, windy, cold in the Everest region and there is also chance of AMS. If any symptoms are seen, consult with the guide or health expertise. Trek to EBC is a journey in the heaven. You encounter numerous massifs, Himalayan range, wild animals, aesthetic landscape, heart-touching people or lifestyle. You may be delighted to seize the momentum in your cameras. We heartily request you to capture the photos while returning back from EBC. It saves our time and helps to reach at the destination in time. Trekking in the Himalayas is a dream of many trekkers but it might become a nightmare if you are not well equipped with the genuine gears. Check the website or consult with the expert and list-out the gears needed for Gokyo-Chola-EBC trek. The climate in the Himalayas fluctuate time to time and season to season, consequently delays the flight for some hours, or even a day or two. It is better if you add one more spare day in your schedule.Have an adventurous expedition in the land of Himalayaswith MMT.

Everest base camp Cho La pass trek

Everest Base Camp trekking is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinated. Our Everest trekking package takes you closer to the ice covered giants, that are most dramatic in Nepal. Everest base camp trekking along the Sherpa villages to Namche Bazaar and Khumjung explores Sherpa lifestyle, beliefs, skills and warmth.

As the altitude rises, temperatures drop: forests and farmland gives way to alpine scrub, rock and ice. From Gorak Shep, a trail leads to the ring of peaks that surround Base Camp (5,350m) on the Khumbu glacier. An early morning, climb up Kala Patthar (5 545m/18 193ft) above Gorak Shep, offers fantastic sunrise views of Everest, Lotse, Nuptse and Pumori on the background. Returning trek becomes easier to Lukla.

We did a trek to Gokyo and EBC in a private 3 person group. The experience was amazing! From our arrival in Kathmandu everything was taken care of. Flights to Lukla are very weather dependent, so I'd recommend having a few days of leeway. Once we arrived, Bhoj, our guide went above and beyond to arrange everything, often staying up to plan around weather, messaging tea houses to ensure rooms were booked, or arranging transportation when plans changed. 100% recommended - especially to see Gokyo, which in the early morning looks spectacular!

Gokyo / Everest Base Camp Trek. I just want to say what a wonderful experience we had while trekking to Everest base camp this June 2022. Mountain Mart made the process simple, cost effective, efficient and fun. The service provided by Dolakh the owner was exceptional! Mountain Mart is a locally owned company which made the experience even better knowing that the money we spent stayed in Nepal. Mountain Mart made us feel more like friends than clients. I cannot say enough about the guide and porters who made the trek possible. Three of us went on the adventure, my son and his friend and it simply would not have been possible without out their help. In particular, our guide Bhoj Kumar Tamang, without him the trek wouldn't have been nearly as awesome. When we first met Bhoj it was like running into an old friend. You could tell he was not just doing his job but that he wanted to ensure your experience would be the best it could be. It was hard not to be infected by his enthusiasm for the area. Bhoj provide great guiding but he was like a trekking concierge as well. Hotels, food, flights, whatever the need Bhoj could make it happen . I am sure he knew everyone in Nepal. We met many on the trail whos guides did not provide like services and you could tell that their experience was less for it. I cannot recommend Mountain Mart Trekking of Nepal enough. If you are going make sure you use their service and make certain you ask for Bhoj as your guide. You will not regret it.

Gokyo- Cho La Pass- EBC- Trek: unforgettable experience
We have planned this trek for 2 years, but had to postpone several times due to Covid19 restrictions. During all this time, we stayed in touch with Dolakh, who gave us regular updates with respect to the situation in Nepal.
At last, we managed to do it in March- April 22. Thanks to MMT it became an amazing experience!
Everything was perfectly organized and even some very short-term changes/ whishes were carried out either by Dolakh or by the best guide ever- Tilak.
Tilak tirelessly took care of all our needs and wishes (like second blanket in each lodge for my freezing friend), continuously monitoring our speed (in order to prevent high altitude sickness) and oxygen content in our blood. He tried to make the best out of every situation in order to provide us the best possible comfort (rooms with the best view or in the quietest part of the lodges) and even adjusted the initial schedule in order to make our life easier. Each evening we had a briefing of what to expect the next day and if we had some special wishes, he always considered them. As I’m quite curious person asking a lot of questions about landscape, flora and fauna, I was very happy to get almost all of them answered and some funny stories on top😉.
Altogether, it was wonderful adventure enabled by a very professional team, which I highly recommend.

Gokyo Lake Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek
Already from the first contact I felt very comfortable with MMT.

Mr. Dolakh, owner of MMT, listened clearly to my requirements for the EBC & Gokyo trekking and went the extra mile to fulfil them. He and his team took care of everything. The service MMT provides is one of the best in Kathmandu. Also for selecting a guide he listened clearly. As I (single person) planned to do the EBC trek as from Bhandar, the total number of trekking days would be 21. So it is important that our characters match well. Also this was taken into account.

My guide, Bhoj Tamang, is a very experienced mountain guide. He comes from the Sherpa community, speaks good English, is very polite and knows perfectly how to interact with his clients. He is always present but not intrusive. He knows many people and get things always done in favor of his clients. He knows the best accommodations and lunch options and was always willing to listen to his clients. On a daily base he asked about my health, so he could take immediate action in case some signs of altitude sickness popped up. I felt very, very secure with Bhoj and was able to reach the Everest Base Camp and passes without any issue, mainly thanks to his support. If you book your trekking with him, ask for the “salami breakfast” (internal joke).

After the trekking I met mr. Dolakh in the new Everest Boutique (Heritage) hotel, his new project. A super nice hotel, build in the local Nepalese architecture (carved wooden windows, stone sculptures, indirect lightning, best panoramic view over Kathmandu) and located in a quiet side street in Thamel. The hotel opening is planned for September 2022.

Mr. Dolakh takes time to listen to the trekking experience of his clients. In this way he’s able to improve his service and become even more respected in the tourism business.

Summery: MMT is one of the top travelagents in Thamel. Price versus service and quality are difficult to beat. Staying in the Everest Boutique hotel will be a “heaven on earth”.

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
