Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek Trip Overview

The Gokyo Lake - Cho La - EBC trek is this region’s ‘high altitude trek.’ After a scenic trans-Himalayan flight to Lukla, follow the Everest trail to Namche Bazaar and an acclimatization day.

Then branch North West to ascend the serene Dudh Koshi Valley to the lake village of Gokyo on the Ngozumpa glacial moraine. Use a rest day to explore the valley. A stiff climb up Gokyo Ri for sunrise offers soaring views over the glacier that include Cho Oyo, Ghyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. Then walk down the valley for an hour and cross the 1km glacier to Tagnag.

Start before sunrise for the tough Cho La ascent and long descent to Lobuche. This can be a difficult, cold but very beautiful trek.

The trail then rises, for two easier days, to Gorak Shep. After lunch, walk to view the ring of peaks surrounding Everest Base Camp, on the Khumbu Glacier – and the ice fall towards the summit.

From Gorak Shep, a sunrise hike up Kala Patthar offers superb views of Everest, the South Col, Nuptse and the glacier below. After breakfast, begin the easier, warmer, four day downward trek to Lukla.

Visit the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park Visitor’s Centre on the hillock: with informative displays on Sherpa culture, local flora and fauna Take an entertaining side trip to the large traditional Sherpa village of Khumjung (3,780m/12,402ft): with fine views of Thamserku, Kangtega, Ama Dablam and Everest – in a sea of lesser peaks. Return to Namche Bazaar for the night An alternative five hour walk northwest of the town, to Thame (3,820m/12,533ft) below the impressive 6,187m/20,300ft Kongde Ri ridge, offers panoramic Himalayan views not seen on the EBC route.

The Machhermo Khola flows through the village from Kyajo Ri and Pharilapche before draining into the Dudh Koshi. This is the last settlement before Gokyo and has a HRA aid post for victims of AMS.

The trail rises gently from the village to a ridge that offers the first views of the north face of Cho-Oyo (8210m/26 907ft) and more views of Kangtega and Thamserku. Ahead in the valley is the snout of the Ngozumpa Glacier: the trail drops back towards the river. A metal bridge crosses the edge of the frozen Longponga Tsho (4,690m/15,383ft): the first of the Dudh Koshi’s six sacred lakes. Before Taboche Tsho, a path leads up onto the glacier – and the Cho La. A strenuous half hour’s walk beyond the lake leads to the summer village of Gokyo set on the side of the moraine and overlooking the blue-green Dudh Pokhari which nestles in a semi circle of high peaks at the foot of Gokyo Ri. Cho-Oyo and the ice ridge to Ghyachung Kang, from which the Ngozumpa glacier flows, are clearly visible behind ridges.

Day 9 : Gokyo Acclimatisation and exploration of the Gokyo Valley (4,790m/15,715ft)

Another scheduled rest day is stipulated to guard against AMS. Gokyo offers two major viewpoints. The first explores the fourth to sixth lakes north of the village. These lakes, together with melt water from the glacier are the source of the Dudh Koshi that is followed from Lukla. A trail rises gently, for three kilometres, north of the village to Thonak Tsho (4,870m/15,980m), the Ngozumpa Tsho (4,980m/16,340ft) and Scoundrel’s viewpoint (5,000m/16,405ft). From here there are tremendous close-up views of Cho-Oyu, Ghyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu. Approximately two hours is needed for the 200m descent back to Gokyo. If there is time, continue north along the path to the Cho-Oyo Base Camp at the northern end of the sixth lake; the Gyazumba Tsho. There are several small peaks in this region that offer vantage points for the surrounding peaks and views of the Nagpa La, the old trade route into Tibet further west.

Day 10 : Gokyo(4,800m/15,747ft) – Gokyo Ri (5,360 m/17,584 ft) – Tagnag, (4700 m/15,500 ft)

The second major viewpoint in the Gokyo region, Gokyo Ri, begins on the northern side of the lake, opposite the village. Its panorama invites an early start and involves a two hour climb to its summit. It overlooks the broad, rubble-covered Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s longest, gouged out beneath a wall of towering peaks on its south-eastern flank. From the flag bedecked summit is the unforgettable vista of the Himalayan chain that includes Cho-Oyu and Ghyachung Kang, the north face of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cholatse, Taboche, Thamserku, Kangtega, Kusum Kangru (all over 6,300m/20,670ft) and many more, some unnamed. After breakfast at the hotel, take a leisurely stroll back down the trail to past the second lake, Taboche Tsho, and then climb up the moraine and cross the kilometre wide glacier to the tiny summer hamlet of Tagnag.

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 10km, 8-9 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today will be the toughest, but most rewarding day of the trek. It calls for a very early start – to beat likely cloud at the pass. The trail is steep from the hotel and climbs through grazing lands over a hill. It then drops into a minor valley before climbing steeply up a vast, loose scree slope on ill-defined paths that eventually lead to the flags that mark the narrow neck. Behind are views of the glacier, Pharilapche and Kyajo Ri. At your feet is the Cho La glacier and to the southeast views that include impressive Cholatse, Baruntse, Lobuche West and East and out to pyramidal Ama Dablam. The descent requires walking down the glacier followed by a boulder scramble to easier terrain below, then down to the summer grazing village of Dzonglha

Accomodation: Lodge (Twins Room)
Activity Duration: 14km, 8-9 hrs.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Another long but rewarding day. Follow the windblown and rocky path along the barren moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to the last village at Gorak Shep. After an early lunch, set out on the feint trail to the world’s highest Base Camp on the Khumbu Glacier: opposite the dreaded icefall – the most dangerous section of an Everest ascent. In April/May the trail is busy with porters carrying in supplies and the site is a riot of colourful tents perched on the dirty ice. For the rest of the year it is a bleak and lonely place set below the impressive ice walls (and avalanches) of the Mahalangur Himal along the Tibetan border. From west to east, the visible peaks are Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse and Nuptse. Everest and the Cwm are hidden behind buttresses. Trek back to Gorak Shep for the night at Lodge.

very early morning climb of 2-3 hrs up Kala Patthar, behind the village, offers a sunrise awakening of the Himalayan chain. First Everest (8,848m/29,028ft), then its surrounding vassals: Pumori (7,145m/23,443ft), Lingtren (6 697/21 973ft), Khumbutse (6,623m/21,730ft), Changtse (7,550m/24,772ft), Lhotse (8,516m/27,941ft) and Nuptse (7,861m/25,792ft). Plus Cho Oyo (8,201m/26,907ft) in the west and Ama Dablam to the south: amidst countless other peaks that crowd the horizon in all directions. Drop back to Gorak Shep for breakfast and then retrace your steps down to Lobuche before continuing south on the Everest – Lukla trail. At the southern end of Khumbu’s glacial moraine is a group of stone-pile memorials to lost climbers and Sherpas. From here there are wonderful views of the Mahalangu Himal along the Tibetan border; including Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse and the Nuptse – Lhotse ridge: which hides Everest from view. Drop down the moraine and continue on to the village of Pheriche for a lower and warmer night.

Day 18 : Final departure
Meals: Breakfast,

This day is marked as departure day. After breakfast, check out your room at 12pm and transfer to Tribhuvan International airport for departure flight. Final word: We have prepared the packages as advised by Mr. knows all (our experts); however, the time duration from one route to another route is generalized and may vary from trekker to trekker. Gokyo-Chola pass-Everest Base Camp is one of the most difficult treks in Everest region. The trail is full of boulders, ice crevasse and slippery therefore be careful throughout the journey. The climate is also bizarre, windy, cold in the Everest region and there is also chance of AMS. If any symptoms are seen, consult with the guide or health expertise. Trek to EBC is a journey in the heaven. You encounter numerous massifs, Himalayan range, wild animals, aesthetic landscape, heart-touching people or lifestyle. You may be delighted to seize the momentum in your cameras. We heartily request you to capture the photos while returning back from EBC. It saves our time and helps to reach at the destination in time. Trekking in the Himalayas is a dream of many trekkers but it might become a nightmare if you are not well equipped with the genuine gears. Check the website or consult with the expert and list-out the gears needed for Gokyo-Chola-EBC trek. The climate in the Himalayas fluctuate time to time and season to season, consequently delays the flight for some hours, or even a day or two. It is better if you add one more spare day in your schedule.Have an adventurous expedition in the land of Himalayaswith MMT.

Planning the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek in the stunning Khumbu region requires proper high-altitude travel insurance, emergency rescue coverage, and helicopter evacuation support. This epic Himalayan adventure combines two of Nepal’s most iconic trekking highlights — Gokyo Lakes, the challenging Cho La Pass (5,420m), and the legendary Everest Base Camp (5,364m) with panoramic views from Kala Patthar (5,545m).

Because this trek involves remote alpine terrain, glaciers, and high passes, trekkers may encounter risks such as altitude sickness, injuries, or unexpected delays. Comprehensive travel insurance is therefore essential for a safe and worry-free trekking experience in Nepal.

Travel Insurance for Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek

Before starting your journey from Kathmandu or taking the scenic mountain flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla), ensure your insurance policy covers high-altitude trekking up to at least 6,000 meters.

Your Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek insurance should include:

✔️ High-altitude trekking coverage (above 5,500m)
✔️ Emergency helicopter rescue & evacuation
✔️ Medical treatment and hospitalization
✔️ Trip cancellation or interruption coverage
✔️ Accidental injury & repatriation
✔️ Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage

Without proper insurance, a helicopter rescue in the Everest region can cost USD 5,000–8,000+, depending on altitude, location, and weather conditions.

Emergency Rescue & Helicopter Evacuation

The Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek is a physically demanding trek with remote high-altitude terrain. Trekkers must navigate glaciers, steep passes, and isolated valleys.

In case of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), injury, or medical emergency, immediate descent and evacuation may be required. Helicopter evacuation is the fastest and safest rescue option in the Everest region.

Emergency Rescue Procedure:

1. Inform your trekking guide immediately.

2. Your trekking agency coordinates with rescue operators and your insurance provider.

3. A helicopter evacuation is arranged from the nearest safe landing point.

4. You are transferred to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.

Experienced aviation companies operate throughout the Everest region, ensuring quick response even in remote high-altitude locations.

Why Insurance is Mandatory for the Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek

This trek covers several high-altitude and remote highlights:

✔️ Trekking through Sagarmatha National Park
✔️ Crossing the challenging Cho La Pass (5,420m)
✔️ Exploring Gokyo Lakes and their stunning turquoise waters
✔️ Reaching Everest Base Camp (5,364m)
✔️ Hiking to Kala Patthar (5,545m) for breathtaking Everest views
✔️ Visiting Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery
✔️ Trekking through remote alpine terrain with limited medical facilities

Due to high altitude, unpredictable Himalayan weather, and isolated trails, travel insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is compulsory for all trekkers.

Important Tips for Trekkers

✔️ Carry both digital and printed copies of your insurance policy.
✔️ Confirm your insurance covers trekking up to at least 6,000 meters.
✔️ Share insurance details with your trekking agency before departure.
✔️ Trek with a licensed and experienced guide for safety and proper acclimatization.
✔️ Inform your guide immediately if you experience altitude sickness symptoms.

Choosing the right insurance, rescue, and evacuation plan for the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek ensures peace of mind while exploring the majestic Himalayas. With proper coverage, trekkers can confidently enjoy glacier crossings, high mountain passes, panoramic Everest views, and authentic Sherpa culture without unnecessary risk.

For a safe, secure, and professionally organized Himalayan adventure, always travel fully insured, well-prepared, and guided by experienced trekking professionals.

During the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek, electricity and battery charging facilities are available in most villages along the trekking route. However, services become limited and more expensive at higher elevations, especially when crossing the challenging Cho La Pass (5,420m) or reaching Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp (5,364m), and the iconic Kala Patthar viewpoint (5,545m).

Because of the remote Himalayan terrain and high altitude, trekkers should plan ahead to manage battery usage and device charging during this epic adventure.

Electricity Availability

Villages and stops along the Gokyo Cho La Pass trek route, including Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla), Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gokyo, and Gorakshep, provide electricity mainly through small hydroelectric systems or solar power.

Important points to keep in mind:

  • Electricity is not available 24/7

  • Solar energy is commonly used at higher altitudes

  • Charging may be limited during cloudy or snowy weather

  • Dining halls are usually the main charging areas in teahouses

  • Power supply becomes weaker and less reliable at higher elevations

  • Charging costs increase closer to the high passes and Everest Base Camp

Charging Cost (Per Device)

Typical charging costs along the trek are:

  • Lukla / Namche Bazaar: USD 2–3

  • Tengboche / Dingboche: USD 3–4

  • Lobuche / Gokyo / Gorakshep: USD 4–6

Charges are usually per device and include:

  • Mobile phones

  • Cameras

  • Power banks

  • Laptops (usually higher cost)

Costs rise at higher elevations due to limited solar energy, transportation logistics, and remote mountain conditions.

Trekking Tips for Power Management

✔️ Carry a high-capacity power bank (10,000–20,000mAh or more)
✔️ Bring extra camera batteries
✔️ Use airplane mode to conserve power
✔️ Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS when not in use
✔️ Keep devices warm inside your jacket to prevent battery drain
✔️ Consider a small portable solar charger for backup

Wi-Fi is available in some lodges, particularly at Namche Bazaar and Gokyo, but it is paid and often slow due to remote mountain connectivity.

Final Overview

Electricity on the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek is basic but manageable with proper preparation. By carrying backup power sources and managing battery usage carefully, trekkers can:

  • Stay connected with family and guides

  • Capture stunning Himalayan landscapes and Gokyo Lakes

  • Ensure essential devices remain charged for emergencies

With proper planning, you can confidently enjoy glacier crossings, Cho La Pass, panoramic mountain views, and the breathtaking Everest scenery without worrying about power shortages, making your trek a safe and unforgettable high-altitude adventure.

When booking the Gokyo Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek, it is important to understand the personal expenses that are not included in the standard trekking package cost. This epic high-altitude adventure in the Everest region combines Gokyo Lakes, Cho La Pass (5,420m), Everest Base Camp (5,364m), and Kala Patthar (5,545m), and passes through remote alpine trails and Sherpa villages.

Since the route is remote and physically demanding, daily personal spending depends on your travel style, comfort level, and necessities.

1. Drinks & Beverages

Hot drinks and bottled items become more expensive at higher elevations, particularly in Gokyo, Lobuche, and Gorakshep.

Typical prices:

  • Tea / Coffee: USD 2–5 per cup

  • Hot Lemon / Ginger Tea: USD 3–5

  • Bottled Water: USD 2–5 (increases with altitude)

  • Soft Drinks: USD 3–5

  • Beer: USD 6–10

💡 Tip: Carry a reusable water bottle and water purification tablets to reduce costs and minimize plastic waste.

2. Battery Charging & Wi-Fi

Typical costs:

  • Mobile charging: USD 2–6 per device

  • Power bank charging: USD 3–6

  • Wi-Fi internet: USD 3–8

Electricity is limited at higher elevations, so prices increase as you trek toward Cho La Pass, Gokyo Lakes, and Everest Base Camp.

3. Hot Shower & Personal Services

Facilities become basic at high altitudes, with limited availability in remote villages.

Typical costs:

  • Hot shower: USD 4–8 per use

  • Laundry service: USD 5–10

  • Extra blankets (in some lodges): small fee

Prices increase significantly in Lobuche, Gokyo, and Gorakshep due to transportation costs and limited resources.

Typical prices:

  • Chocolate / Energy Bars: USD 2–5

  • Biscuits / Chips: USD 2–4

  • Toiletries (if purchased on trek): higher than Kathmandu prices

💡 Recommendation: Buy snacks, energy bars, and personal supplies in Kathmandu before flying to Lukla to save money.

5. Tips for Guide & Porter

Tipping is customary and appreciated in Nepal’s trekking culture.

Typical guidelines:

  • Guide: USD 10–15 per day (group basis)

  • Porter: USD 7–10 per day

Tips may vary depending on service quality, trek duration, and group size.

Estimated Daily Personal Budget

👉 USD 20–35 per day for personal expenses

Daily spending may increase if you purchase alcohol, bottled water, Wi-Fi, or extra snacks.

✔️ Carry enough Nepali cash (ATMs available mainly in Lukla and Namche Bazaar)
✔️ Expect prices to rise with altitude
✔️ Avoid unnecessary bottled water purchases
✔️ Plan your daily personal expenses in advance

The Cho La Pass involves steep climbs, high-altitude exposure, and potentially snow or icy trail conditions. Trekkers must be prepared for long, physically demanding hours during the pass crossing.

3. Long Trekking Days
Some days require 7–8 hours of hiking, especially when moving between remote high-altitude villages or crossing glaciers.

4. Cold Himalayan Weather
Temperatures often drop below freezing at night, particularly above 4,500 meters and during early morning climbs to Kala Patthar or Gokyo Ri.

Everest base camp Cho La pass trek

Everest Base Camp trekking is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinated. Our Everest trekking package takes you closer to the ice covered giants, that are most dramatic in Nepal. Everest base camp trekking along the Sherpa villages to Namche Bazaar and Khumjung explores Sherpa lifestyle, beliefs, skills and warmth.

As the altitude rises, temperatures drop: forests and farmland gives way to alpine scrub, rock and ice. From Gorak Shep, a trail leads to the ring of peaks that surround Base Camp (5,350m) on the Khumbu glacier. An early morning, climb up Kala Patthar (5 545m/18 193ft) above Gorak Shep, offers fantastic sunrise views of Everest, Lotse, Nuptse and Pumori on the background. Returning trek becomes easier to Lukla.

We did a trek to Gokyo and EBC in a private 3 person group. The experience was amazing! From our arrival in Kathmandu everything was taken care of. Flights to Lukla are very weather dependent, so I'd recommend having a few days of leeway. Once we arrived, Bhoj, our guide went above and beyond to arrange everything, often staying up to plan around weather, messaging tea houses to ensure rooms were booked, or arranging transportation when plans changed. 100% recommended - especially to see Gokyo, which in the early morning looks spectacular!

Gokyo / Everest Base Camp Trek. I just want to say what a wonderful experience we had while trekking to Everest base camp this June 2022. Mountain Mart made the process simple, cost effective, efficient and fun. The service provided by Dolakh the owner was exceptional! Mountain Mart is a locally owned company which made the experience even better knowing that the money we spent stayed in Nepal. Mountain Mart made us feel more like friends than clients. I cannot say enough about the guide and porters who made the trek possible. Three of us went on the adventure, my son and his friend and it simply would not have been possible without out their help. In particular, our guide Bhoj Kumar Tamang, without him the trek wouldn't have been nearly as awesome. When we first met Bhoj it was like running into an old friend. You could tell he was not just doing his job but that he wanted to ensure your experience would be the best it could be. It was hard not to be infected by his enthusiasm for the area. Bhoj provide great guiding but he was like a trekking concierge as well. Hotels, food, flights, whatever the need Bhoj could make it happen . I am sure he knew everyone in Nepal. We met many on the trail whos guides did not provide like services and you could tell that their experience was less for it. I cannot recommend Mountain Mart Trekking of Nepal enough. If you are going make sure you use their service and make certain you ask for Bhoj as your guide. You will not regret it.

Gokyo- Cho La Pass- EBC- Trek: unforgettable experience
We have planned this trek for 2 years, but had to postpone several times due to Covid19 restrictions. During all this time, we stayed in touch with Dolakh, who gave us regular updates with respect to the situation in Nepal.
At last, we managed to do it in March- April 22. Thanks to MMT it became an amazing experience!
Everything was perfectly organized and even some very short-term changes/ whishes were carried out either by Dolakh or by the best guide ever- Tilak.
Tilak tirelessly took care of all our needs and wishes (like second blanket in each lodge for my freezing friend), continuously monitoring our speed (in order to prevent high altitude sickness) and oxygen content in our blood. He tried to make the best out of every situation in order to provide us the best possible comfort (rooms with the best view or in the quietest part of the lodges) and even adjusted the initial schedule in order to make our life easier. Each evening we had a briefing of what to expect the next day and if we had some special wishes, he always considered them. As I’m quite curious person asking a lot of questions about landscape, flora and fauna, I was very happy to get almost all of them answered and some funny stories on top😉.
Altogether, it was wonderful adventure enabled by a very professional team, which I highly recommend.

Gokyo Lake Cho La Pass Everest Base Camp Trek
Already from the first contact I felt very comfortable with MMT.

Mr. Dolakh, owner of MMT, listened clearly to my requirements for the EBC & Gokyo trekking and went the extra mile to fulfil them. He and his team took care of everything. The service MMT provides is one of the best in Kathmandu. Also for selecting a guide he listened clearly. As I (single person) planned to do the EBC trek as from Bhandar, the total number of trekking days would be 21. So it is important that our characters match well. Also this was taken into account.

My guide, Bhoj Tamang, is a very experienced mountain guide. He comes from the Sherpa community, speaks good English, is very polite and knows perfectly how to interact with his clients. He is always present but not intrusive. He knows many people and get things always done in favor of his clients. He knows the best accommodations and lunch options and was always willing to listen to his clients. On a daily base he asked about my health, so he could take immediate action in case some signs of altitude sickness popped up. I felt very, very secure with Bhoj and was able to reach the Everest Base Camp and passes without any issue, mainly thanks to his support. If you book your trekking with him, ask for the “salami breakfast” (internal joke).

After the trekking I met mr. Dolakh in the new Everest Boutique (Heritage) hotel, his new project. A super nice hotel, build in the local Nepalese architecture (carved wooden windows, stone sculptures, indirect lightning, best panoramic view over Kathmandu) and located in a quiet side street in Thamel. The hotel opening is planned for September 2022.

Mr. Dolakh takes time to listen to the trekking experience of his clients. In this way he’s able to improve his service and become even more respected in the tourism business.

Summery: MMT is one of the top travelagents in Thamel. Price versus service and quality are difficult to beat. Staying in the Everest Boutique hotel will be a “heaven on earth”.

Had a fantastic time in Nepal with Lochan, Dowa and Kieron. They make an amazing team. We travelled the Gokyo, Chola pass, EBC trek. Really impressed with the care and attention to everyone in our group. I highly recommend this company

Two Madam’s went trekking in Nepal - Together for adventure 😀

Gokyo Cho La pass Everest Base camp Trek. Phenomenal, what an amazing experience. Bhoj our guide and Ram our Sherpa are good friends and work so well together, they made our experience so much more than just a trek with their willingness to share their knowledge, culture and experience. Bhoj went above and beyond to ensure we had the option to take advantage of every opportunity including options beyond our outlined itinerary. Bhoj and Ram are both incredibly polite, caring, considerate, friendly and fun and we will always remember this trip because of them, they are our friends and we can’t thank them enough. We recommend asking for them by name - your guide and Sherpa can make a huge difference to your experience. Nepal is a very special country - have fun, stay safe, don’t take advantage of anyone and be nice 😀.

Unforgettable Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes over Cho La Pass with Mountain Mart Trekkking

We were very happy to enjoy a thrilling trip of the Mount Everest Base Camp, Gokyo lakes and Cho la Pass with Mountain Mart Trekking. Our guides were very supportive and gave us the necessary support during the entire trek.

We were given the most delicious foods and warm drinks when temperatures were very low most of the time in the snow on the trek.

Our porters were very friendly and also helped us whenever possible. The guides and porters were always available to assist the hikers during difficult times.
The guides even provided extra support while one of the trekkers became ill. The support was unbelievably and caring and it gives one the assurance that one is in good hands no matter what the difficult circumstances may be.

We reached the Everest Base Camp after going up the challenging Chola Pass with the help of our guides.

Thank you to Mountain Mart Trekking for a great and unforgettable trip!

solo, middle age female...from flat Florida

I started to speak to Dolakh (Mountain mart’s owner) in mid-2019 to plan my trip for Oct-Nov 2020 and well we all know what happened. I booked a solo, Gokyo, Cho La Pass, EBC trek (18 days) for late October 2022. The back-and-forth email communication was easy and talking via What’s app was also convenient. A week before the trek I called Dolakh to check on some final details, he mentioned that the rainy season was still going strong and the flights to Lukla were delayed 2-3 days, he suggested booking a helicopter (for a fee) to avoid any delay/stress. I was very glad we did plus the Kathmandu authorities are making life very difficult for tourists and trekking companies these days. They have blocked departures from Kathmandu coming & going to Lukla due to air traffic congestion during trekking season. You now have to get up in the middle of the night to get on a bus and drive 4 hours/145k/90Miles on some very twisty road to get to the Ramechhap airport. Issues arise if your flight is delayed, the area has very limited accommodation and most of them are close to 20 miles away. The stories of that bus ride are not pretty in fact for someone like me with bad motion sickness it sounded petrifying and I asked Dolakh to put me on a helicopter for the return flight too (I still puked) … LOL. One of the wonderful advantages of booking with Mountain Mart is that Dolakh also owns a beautiful hotel in Thamel in the heart of the tourist hub in Kathmandu. The hotel is first class, build in traditional Newari architecture and it’s very quiet as it’s on a very small street with little to no traffic. After a quick helicopter ride to Lukla I was greeted by my guide Bishal. Bishal is an incredible person, my brother, my friend, my bodyguard, he made this trek possible for me and I’m eternally grateful. I thought I was in fair physical condition, I had done Kilimanjaro a few years back, I took my training seriously but I for sure underdetermined the challenge. I was walking 5 miles a day (10 on weekend), weight training and doing (real)stairs for 1-2 hrs 3-4 times a week. NOPE! To be ready you need to do double steps 4 hrs up then 2-3 going down also double steps…. Maybe then you’ll get close. Luckily it was a solo trip and didn’t have to worry about keeping up and was able to walk at my own speed without pressure. Bishal was very supportive and patient. The good news is that was a much lower risk of altitude sickness, most of the people I saw having trouble were the young/fit trekkers, a lot of them needing helicopter evacuation or turning around. It’s not worth pushing too hard or too fast even if you feel great. It was a splendid trek, my best decision was to go to Gokyo before EBC truly beautiful and so much more than EBC. After Gokyo came Cho La Pass which really kicked my butt, a long and very difficult day, a couple days later was EBC. I was obviously glad I made it to base camp but not the best views of the trip. I skipped Kala Patthar as I had nothing left in the tank and already did Gokyo Ri for the best view of Everest and other peaks. I would say if you want beauty do Gokyo and back via the Kongma La Pass but if you’re doing the bucket list then EBC. I was very lucky to have the time (3 weeks) which allow me to do both without rushing. Although quite difficult for a middle age, not in (apparently) top shape, it was a truly epic trip. Where I exceled was my breathing, my O2 saturation only dropped in high 80’S on the last day in Gorakshep. When everyone around me were barely in the 70’s. I practiced nose only breathing during my training I also did pressure breathing and used the Wim Hof method, a book I recommend is “breath” by James Nestor, great insights. I was maintaining a mid to high 90’s prior to that. In Gokyo for example even Bishal and other guides were in the mid 80’s, some trekkers using my O2 monitor were in the low 70’s!!! Another reason I didn’t get sick not even the slightest headache. The weather was perfect, not a drop of rain, big contrast from the few weeks prior, but it was still very cold, the second you are out of the sun you will feel the chill, I was very grateful for the warm dining room in the tea houses in the evening. A tip I’d like to share with the ladies and the guys for that matter is to bring a pee system, they are small and light weight and well worth it. The nights are so cold and unless you have a private bathroom attached to the room (not always available) you’ll be very glad you didn’t have to walk down the hall in minus something degrees often with wet floor and no seat toilet. Ask your guide to get you 2-3 empty plastic bottles and just dump them in the am. Another thing I was happy with was the water filter I used a “GRAYL” bottle, no chlorine tablets needed it filters both virus and bacteria’s, easy system to use, the only negative it’s a bit heavy. Every morning I would filter the hot bottle of water that I was given for the night to keep warm, the water even boiled had a funny taste, I couldn’t stand it (I don’t like flavor water or electrolytes) but with the Garyl filter it was perfect. Do bring a Nalgene bottle too, for the boiled water at night and extra water for the long days, the Garyl is only 700ml. The one thing I wish I brough with me was a few packs of hand warmers, I could have use them on most morning. Because of the great weather, I didn’t have any delays and was back in Kathmandu with 5 days to kill, Kathmandu is not my favorite city and having picked up a cold on my way down the mountain I was ready to get back home. I was able to get an earlier flight out and a few days of rest before I had to get back to work. Great experience with Mountain Mart, VIP treatment from first to last day I very highly recommend this company and it’s even more remarkable people.

Gokyo Ri + EBC Trek With Incredible Guide

Truly a once in a lifetime experience that was superbly facilitated from start to finish by the fine folks at Mountain Mart. Highly recommend Gokyo Ri as it was much quieter than EBC, we were happy to have spent the majority of our time off the main trail!

Bishal is an exceptional guide and human being; he knew everyone on the mountain, which made us feel safe and secure, knew every corner of the mountains and offered so much care and attention to everything on the trek. My friend and I were both quite ill at times on the trek and he cared for us like we were family.

Highly recommend this company for your trekking needs in Nepal!

If you are going make sure you use their service and make certain you ask for Bhoj as your guide. You will not regret it.

Seamless experience, with excellent support and communication.

My father, friend and I wanted to do the Gokyo/ Everest Base Camp trek. Mountain Mart Trekking was a company that a colleague had recommended, so I decided to try them. From the moment I reached out to the company, to the moment we were leaving Nepal, Mountain Mart supported us 110%. Dolakh (Owner) was in constant contact with us and he was able to rearrange our itinerary several times due to changes in weather and travel plans. Dolakh made sure that everything was seamless and hassle free. We were even able to book a quick trip to Chitwan last minute, through Dolakh. I couldn't believe how quickly he was able to put things together for us. I also can't compliment our guide, Bhoj, enough for his amazing service. Bhoj made the whole trek experience so much fun and so informative. He constantly went out of his way to make sure we had the best lodges, best food, and best deals at the local markets. He stayed up late several times arranging a helicopter transport (We decided to cut a few days off after we reached base camp), as well as transport out of Lukla when weather prevented the regular flights from coming in and out. Bhoj was constantly upbeat and happy. He made sure we stayed motivated and healthy. I felt like he truly cared about our experience, and he took great pride in his profession as a guide. We ran into many other groups on the trek who did not have the same service from their guides. Lastly, we had excellent porters (arranged by Mountain Mart). Our porters were treated excellent by the company, and we had the chance to interact with them many times. The best part is that Mountain Mart is a local company! It is based in Nepal, so you are contributing to the Nepalese economy, instead of some foreign tour agency. I can't say thank you enough to Dolakh, Bhoj, and the rest of the team for making our trip to Nepal so amazing! I would 10/10 recommend this company to anyone who wants the best possible people on your side, while trekking/touring in Nepal.

EBC & Gokyo trek 21 days

Enjoy your trek!

Everest base camp, gokyo and chola trek

The trek was led by 2 guides: Bhoj and Dawa. Both of them are very helpful and friendly.

Bhoj, the head guide is very professional with deep expertise on the mountain terrains and conditions. He is well versed in the local customs and folklores, which provides deeper understanding on the local cultures. Furthermore, he is certified in medicinal provision. This served to be essential as we are often sick from AMS and the deep cold in the mountains.

Dawa, the vice guide always ensure the trekking experience is enjoyable. He supported us logistically and physically in times of needs and exhaustions.
The trek was also accompanied by 2 potters:Chandra and Rudra. Even though interaction among us is minimal, the potters are steadfast and friendly. They are able to cover all types of terrains (including slippery snowy sludge) with heavy loads.

In overall, my friends and I are satisfied with the services provided by the staff and the organising company: Mountain Mart. This trip definitely has left us a wonderful experience and lasting memories.

Wonderful trek 15 days Gokyo-Chola Pass-EBC

The owner Dolakh and our guide Bhoj were very accommodating when our international flight got severely delayed and we had to change our pick-up at the last minute many times. They were kind enough to re-assess our trekking itinerary and gave us options on how we can maximise our time on the mountains. During the entire trek, my friends and I had fell ill several times due to the altitude, food and weather but Bhoj was always on hand to assist us and gave us good advice on how to recover. We were never rushed to complete our trek and felt like there was good coordination by the guide. Our assistant guide, Dawa was also always ready to lead us in the trek and assist us when we require help. The porters, Chandra and Rudra were superheroes, always making sure our bags arrived in our rooms before us so that we could get comfortable once we arrived at the tea house. Overall, it was a tough but very enjoyable trek with the lead of such a knowledgeable and cheerful guide and company. I would highly recommend everyone to engage mountain mart if you plan on visiting Nepal for trekking!

Great trek up to Gokyo Ri

Our guide was Yukumar and our Porter Ratna. Both very polite and friendly and helpful the entire way.

Yukumar met up at the airport when we arrived in Kathmandu, made sure our hotel was taken care of and was ready in the morning for our drive to ramechhap airport. He took care of our bags, boarding passes and informed us what was happening every step of the way.

From Lukla to Gokyo, he was helpful in pointing out features and mountains over and over because we couldn't remember the names and was friendly the whole way telling us about himself and Nepal. Every question he answered honestly and friendly. He asked us each step of the way how we were feeling, if we were hungry, and just overall how we were doing. Luckily we only had a couple of days of feeling the altitude change. Yukumar was prompt on making sure we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the times we liked and never made us feel like we were running late or early for anything.

Once we arrived in Gokyo, Yukumar was on top of everything enough to let us know we should hike Gokyo Ri that afternoon to catch the sunset and because the weather report for the next day called for clouds. Thanks to him we were able to see the most beautiful mountains in the perfect light. He was even very encouraging was I struggled the 2000 ft to the summit.

On our way back to Lukla, he allowed us to change our nights stay to better suit how much we wanted to trek and what we wanted to see on the way back. Again, he was very helpful and made everything feel easy and with us in mind. Even making sure we had running hot water for a much needed shower.

Ratna was the silent machine that carried our bags up and down. That alone made it hard to complain but even if he didn't speak English, he played cards with Yukumar and us. Yukumar translated for us when we wanted to talk and we were thankful for his happy demeanor the entire time. He was prompt to pick up our bags in the morning and always beat us to the lodge or arrived right with us.

Yukumar and Ratna made us feel welcome and made sure we never felt isolated or lost. It wouldn't have been the same without them.

The climate in the Himalayas fluctuate time to time and season to season, consequently delays the flight for some hours, or even a day or two.

Hot drinks and bottled items become more expensive at higher elevations, particularly in Gokyo, Lobuche, and Gorakshep.

Typical prices:

  • Hot Lemon / Ginger Tea: USD 3–5

  • Bottled Water: USD 2–5 (increases with altitude)

💡 Tip: Carry a reusable water bottle and water purification tablets to reduce costs and minimize plastic waste.

2. Battery Charging & Wi-Fi

Typical costs:

  • Mobile charging: USD 2–6 per device

  • Power bank charging: USD 3–6

  • Wi-Fi internet: USD 3–8

Electricity is limited at higher elevations, so prices increase as you trek toward Cho La Pass, Gokyo Lakes, and Everest Base Camp.

3. Hot Shower & Personal Services

Facilities become basic at high altitudes, with limited availability in remote villages.

Typical costs:

  • Hot shower: USD 4–8 per use
