Chulu West peak(6419 m /21350 ft) is located north – east of Annapurna ranges next to most popular Annapurna Transverse route. It’s ascended by Japanese Expedition in 1953 for the first time. Chulu West peak is part of the Manang Himal which is rightly included in larger Damodar Himal. The eastern limit of which runs south from Chako and Phu Khola. To the south it is bounced by the Mayshyangdi river and Mesokanta Pass. North – to – south is remarketed Hunlung Khola, Nar Khola and Phu Khola. We will have some confusion in name and location of Chulu West and Chulu East. There are several other peaks range with similar height and shapes. Present map of the area doesn’t have any clarification. Four summits apparently in Chulu range, two of which possible on the permit for Chulu West and two on the Chulu east permit. Most of the trekking maps available in the market are highly misleading.
Chulu west trekking route follows upstream of Marshyandi River tracing Annapurna circuit trail crossing many swinging suspension bridges. We have adequate opportunities to acclimatize and build our fitness levels before we arrive Chulu West Base Camp. We trek to Tilicho Lake (4920 m) as acclimatizing trip and reunite again to Annapurna Circuit trail in Yak Kharka. Leave the circuit trail and follow the tiny path north of the valley to the base camp. Chulu west climbing route follows a subsidiary north – west ridge that leads up to the main peak. Set high camp and summit Chulu West next morning and back to the base camp same day. Trek back to the Circuit trail again and follow Thorong La pass (5416 m) route. Hereafter our trail leads through the kali Gandaki valley through Ghandruk loop and short drive to Pokhara.
Chulu West peak climbing in Nepal is an objective, for those extending their climbing experience beyond the trekking peaks of the Everest region. It’s also suited for an expeditionary style ascent with group members playing an active role in establishing camps while preparing for summit.
